Venezia: Day Two

Monday, March 7 was our second day in Venezia. We woke up pretty early and caught the boat to St. Mark's Square, where we waited to go into the church.

Venezia in the morning

Everything looked a little different during the daylight, such as St. Mark's Tower...

And the church was pretty cool too, the entrance in particular is very eastern in style, this is mostly because Venezia was part of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) and therefore was heavily influenced by Constantinople. In fact a lot of the art of Venezia was stolen from the Byzantines.

Then we noticed the Pigeons. There were millions of them, they were crazy, and we had bird seed... let the chaos begin!

They got me too...

After going in the Church (vietato fotographia) we headed through the streets of Venice on a little exploratory tour, lead by a very short lady who liked to shout "yoohoo!" to get our attention.

The canals were very pretty

We walked all over the town, through a lot of different Campos (the Venetian word for small plaza) and to a lot of different churches. The scenery was pretty interesting, very old and colorful.

After our little tour Jim and Dave and I went in search of some decent food and found BURGER KING, which was so much better than the American Embassy. Little did I know I was going to eat at Burger King a lot in Holland and Germany. We started off after dinner to prove that you don't need a map to find your way around Venice. First we crossed the Rialto bridge...

Leaving from the Rialto Bridge Jim, Dave, and I made our way all the way through the little tiny streets of Venice to the Guggenhiem Venezia without ever stopping for directions or looking at a map, and we were never lost. Internal GPS baby.

For the afternoon we spent a while at the Guggenhiem museum in Venezia, which was interesting, though much smaller than the other Guggenhiems as this was the original, formerly the house of Peggy Guggenhiem (who was crazy rich and started the whole modern art museums business).

That evening we went back to Lido and hung out in the Hotel for a bit, then got ready for our early morning adventures for the next day. Thus concludes day two in Venezia.
